Wine, Truly a work of art!
Wine for many years now has been my drink a choice. I started with peach ciders when I was much younger, then graduated onto rose vino. Not much of a connoisseur at this point in time. But I now can truly appreciate and enjoy a fine
cabernet
or bold shiraz.
WHAT IS WINE?
-
simply, it is the beverage made from fermented grapes
-
Basic types; red, white, blush and champagne
-
red is made from red varietal grapes, and in the maceration process the skins are left on longer giving it a deeper color
-
white is made from white grape varietal or red grapes but the skins are seperated using only the juice from the red grapes
-
blush or rose is made in a similar fashion to red, only the skins are taken away much sooner only allowing the vino to be tinted with color
-
champagne is made from either grape varietal, buy it goes through a second fermenting process as well as a special aging bottle handling process

I did use to buy the big bottles of rose, and by that I don't mean the 1.5 L bottles...heehee I mean the big job with the ring on it! Yes the gallon jug of vino. (uh, I shudder now at the though of drinking it) Now I appreciate a nice glass of
Chianti...
a term I was very unfamiliar with when I was younger.
That was back in the day, waaaaay back in the day before I started drinking decent wines. :-) and moved on from the gallon jug to a much more mellow Ernest and gallo rose. I think I stuck with the rose vino for most of my twenties. (Uuugh much much too sweet for me now though).
Before I moved back to Canada from the state's I was on a business trip to North Carolina and I remembered ordering room service. My daughter Alisha was with me, she was about four. I ordered the clubhouse sandwich, French onion soup and my very first glass of chardonnay, it was Ernest and gallo.
Funny how some small memories just stay with you for years. I really enjoyed that glass of chardonnay. I called back room service and order a second glass, and for another bowl of French onion soup (Alisha ate mine) Now every time I make homemade french onion soup, or have a glass of chardonnay it reminds me of our trip.
I switched to the whites, specifically
chardonnays.
A couple years went by and I moved back to my hometown of Chilliwack, British Columbia in Canada. Alisha was six and it was a long drive for us. We arrived in the evening and my dad opened up a bottle of Chianti Ruffino for us to drink.
Now my experience with red vino the few times I had tried it, had been horrific. Yes, there was another jug with a ring on a involved, and yes I think it was that god-awful ruby red. :-( but I was so tired and happy to be home I gladly accepted this glass of red.
Well it changed the way I thought of Reds with the very first set. Chianti and ruby red are worlds apart. No for all you novice vino drinkers you can spend too little on a bottle.
Stay away from the big jugs! ( I just mean vino jugs) That glass of chianti was 13 years ago this month. Ever since then I have tried many many spectacular reds.
I am most definitely red vino drinker, but in the summer I will occasionally have a nice cold glass of chardonnay, or sometimes white or red sangria.
My favorite chardonnay is fat bastard. I love it with Chrismas turkey dinner. It's a French chardonnay. In the winter I pretty much stick to my beloved red and grand marnier but that's another website entirely, I have an obsession for granny... I like to end my day with a glass of red... Not every day... But most days :-)
How was a
red,
white,
or rose
made anyway? Reds are made of course from red varietal grapes. After they are harvested they're destemmed and crushed in large tanks. Within hours the skins of the grapes start to separate and float to the top of the tank.
If a winemaker is making rose, they usually separate the skins from the juice after a few hours possibly more to just get the taint of pink in from the skins, and not red. It is at this point that they drain the juice off into barrels or into another tank. For Reds, obviously this step is much longer. As it is desirable to have a much more in intense color rouge for our red wine to be.
Sometimes with rose a vino maker will blend reds and whites together, but traditionally it is the above described cap and drain method that is used.
For white, they of course use the white varietal grapes. Which technically are not white, they are yellow, greenish yellow and such. But as long as they're not dark red or darkish blue they are classified as white grapes. White can be made with rouge grapes but only the juices used. Mostly white is made from white grapes.
Then for all wines they need to ferment in either the big steel tanks or in barrels, age, and gained some character. :-) Then they are bottled. Ready to drink yet? Sometimes yes, sometimes best to have a little more patience and age some more. With age comes grace and character, the same goes for wine.
