Remember, Wine Tours Are All About Having A Good Time!
The Beauty of wine tours
It is a safe bet that the majority of people in the world have heard the term winery before. They have probably also heard about wine tours. It doesn't matter where in the world you are, there are tours available. You don't have to be wine connoisseur to enjoy a tour; all you have to do is enjoy vino and new experiences.
Once you go on one, chances are you will be eagerly planning your next one as soon as possible. One quick important tip before you go, it is a faux paus to wear a strong perfume or cologne, it can interfere with tasting and smelling of aromas for you and your fellow vino tasters.
If you've never been on a tour of a winery and you enjoy wine, we highly suggest you go on one. You'll learn so much and it's fun. Plus usually most winery's have cool little gift shops you can purchase their wines and other related items from. In fact this might be my favorite part of the tour...the shopping afterwards.

Hundreds and sometimes thousands of people visit wine tasting events and go on wine tours. They are an enjoyable escape from the mundane. Some people go to learn more about the wine making process, learn about the grapes that are used to make their favorite
wine
and what years are the best from a particular winery. They are going more for the educational factor that is there. It is a great way to meet new people, get recommendations on other wines that you will just have to try and enjoy a weekend away. There is truly nothing else in the world that compares to one of these tours. While fundamentally each tour is the same, to get you to as many wineries as possible in the time they have to allow you enjoy as many samples as possible, but no two tours are the same.
There are wine tours that you can go on just you and special someone, where you can ride in a limo, enjoy exquisite cuisine and a romantic evening.
There are also tours that you can go on with a group of friends as well as tours that are open to every and any one that is looking to enjoy the fruit of the vine. If you plan on attending a huge event where there will be multiple wineries in attendance with their vast selections of wines it is important that you learn the art of wine tasting.
First keep in mind that a vino tour is generally 48 hours long. It's a fantastic way to spend the weekend :-) The goal is not to hit every winery on the tour but to enjoy each and everyone that you visit.
You will want to take the time to stop, look, taste, listen and learn all the while you are enjoying your day. If you are attending a large event where there is more walking involved then driving go with a friend.
If you are on a driving tour it is a good idea that you decide before hand who is going to be the designated driver, or rent a limo so that you don't have to worry about it.
There are sometimes bus tours available for wine tours in regions where there are a lot of wineries, you could take advantage of this option. The drawback to this is sometimes they are crowded and you might have to stay much longer than you want at specific wineries. But the upside is you can drink as much as you want, as long as you don't get to silly now.;-)
Dress comfortable, remember that you are going to be walking, sitting and standing and chances are pretty good that you will be in a crowd. So leave the high heels and the formal wear at home.
Comfortable walking shoes, nice clothes but not your best clothes. Comfort is key to any wine tour. Leave the 3" highheel black leather boots to wear for dinner later on :-) You should also go lightly or skip all together the aftershave, cologne and perfume.
Remember part of the enjoyment of wine tasting is to first enjoy the bouquet. You want to be able to smell what you are getting ready to taste or you are missing part of the fantastic experience.
Eat, yes eat a good breakfast and make sure that you have time for lunch. While the point is to enjoy yourself, you don't want to be completely snookered before lunch on the first day. If your tour is during the warmer time of the year you may want to bring a picnic lunch. Plus if you driving, it is good to have food in the car to enjoy in between wineries.

You should also plan on going early; tours are usually the busiest in the afternoons. Big wine tasting events also tend to get packed around the afternoon hours and stay that way most of the day. This isn't saying that it is too late to go and enjoy tasting all the wines available, it simply means you will be waiting your turn longer... which could give you the opportunity to enjoy the music that is being played or meet new people.
Another key point when wine tasting is to know what order to taste your wines. A good way to remember how to go about tasting multiple wines is that you should drink wine like you eat a good dinner. You start with the appetizer, slowly move to the entrée and end with dessert. In other words you want to start with the lightest colored wines and the driest and then move the strongest and sweetest wines. In other words your port wine should always be the last vino you try.
A well known etiquette in the vino world, not all that well known to the average wine taster is spitting. Yes spitting, if you drank every vino you tasted you would most definitely be hammered before you made it to lunch. It is recommended that you look where you spit before you do so, but if you want to make it through the day it is an etiquette you will want to practice.
The last thing you should worry about is taking tasting notes. Enjoy the wine, enjoy the ambiance, enjoy the company... just take in the entire experience. Believe it or not wine tours are not about marking a score sheet about the different wines you taste. Buy the wines you like that day, sign up for the mailing lists the winery offers so that you get the newsletter and tasting notes sent to you.
Along with tasting the wines all day, there is another bottle that you should be carrying with you and sipping from often, a bottle of water. Travel and wine tend to dry people out. The more water you sip, the longer you will be able to taste more wines. The less likely you are going to wake up with a headache the second day of your tour.
Finally, a vital tip to remember on wine tour is that whatever goes in must come out. This may seem like a no brainer but just wait until you go to your first event... you will see a number of interesting things done by people that didn't heed that use the potty tip. So at every stop you make, get out and hit the bathroom even if you don't think you need to. Can't enjoy your vino quite as much while your doing the dance!
Remember that going on wine tours is about relaxation and enjoyment. It isn't about rushing anything. There are wine events just about everywhere in the world, so regardless of where you live or where you are visiting you can go to one. They are events like no other and as long as you follow the tips provided here you will completely enjoy your tour and be looking forward to the next one as soon as possible.
Cheers
