Riesling Is A Very Popular German White Wine!

Riesling is a very popular German white wine that is a dry semi sweet variety, and is enjoyed all over the world. The grapes for this wine originate in the Rhine region of Germany and are high in acidity making them perfect for sparkling wine. They have been used to make this variety of wine since the 1400's, and it is very rarely oaked.

Here are some of our favorite choices:

2007 Von Hovel QbA Wine

The very first time I ever tried this wine was just a few years ago, when my good friends Anne and Erwin brough over a bottle for dinner one night.

I'm more of a red drinker myself, but to my surprise I quite liked it. And no we didn't just have the wine for dinner there was food too. Lol ;-)

This grape varietal ranks 20th among variety of grapes for growing in the world. It is often classed as one of the top three white wines in the world to drink, and is chosen alongside Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

riesling This wine has a long history, and its parentage has often caused major discussions some people claimed it originated from the Rhine Mountains.

However, it became clear that the parentage was far more structured.

These vines are very hardwearing, and tolerant of very cold weather making them ideal to grow in the conditions they do.

They are very productive and can yield up to six tons per acre. In 1996 there were over 52,000 hectares of vineyards, and riesling wine grapes were the most grown variety in Germany that year.

Many people consider this wine to be much to sweet to be any good, unfortunately here in North America we do not seem to get the really good reisling wines.

And if you can find them, they are quite expensive....but well worth it, they are not all sweet, some are very nice dry beautiful wines.

The berries that are produced are hang in small, winged clusters, and are very round and soft when ripe with light green skins. To produce an ideal grape from this varietal the perfect growing conditions are essential. They will need a cool climate yet strong sun and protection from the winds.

All of these factors will help to grow the ideal grapes helping to produce incredible wines. The vine yards alongside the Mosel River offer these ideal conditions, and are well known for their excellent riesling wines. Most of the wines that are produced from these grapes have a distinctive strong flavor, and apple like aromas. reisling wine These wines are never stored for any amount of time, and are best drank when young and fresh. This wine has a very fruity taste and will often have aromas of pineapples, apples, honey, rose blossom and grapefruit. There is some of the riesling range that is incredibly expensive, and these come from the grapes that have been left to sit on the vines.

These grapes will be selected for the late harvest dessert wines. Although the process is considered strange by some wine makers, German vineyards will often use the process.

This style of concentrated riesling wines will have far more sugar than other wines, which is needed to counteract the high level of acidity. Due to these factors this wine has a far more complex flavor.

The delicate nature of the grapes when producing the wines requires very careful handling to ensure they do not bruise. If the skins are broken on the grapes they will cause the wine to be bitter, and will throw the balance of the wine.

This wine is very versatile and can be served with a number of different foods and courses. The riesling wine can stand up to strong flavors, and is equally as suited to pork and fish as much as Thai and Asian cuisines. This wine needs to be served at an optimum temperature of 11c, and any colder will spoil the flavor. Once you have had a glass of this delectable wine it is easy to see why it is so popular. Thanks Anne for introducing me to this wine. :-)

Cheers
