The Organic Wine Industry Is A Growing One!

organic wine

Grape growing originally was organic by nature. But with the increased demand for grapes in wine-making industry and the fact that naturally cultivated grapes are likely to be small and tend to have unequal ripening in a cluster, farmers begin using fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides to ensure a good harvest. Nobody paid attention to the need for organic wine.

Mounting health concerns conveyed by clients led to an impressive increase in the trade of organic goods. Since the 1990s, organic food accounts for only about two percent of the global sales but now the market is expanding by 20 percent yearly. Last year my mother had two major cancer surgeries. Colon cancer, it has brough an awareness to everything I now put on the table for my family. Yes in some scenario's cancer and other diseases are going to happen anyway. But with a lot of different types of cancers and other diseases as well, diet plays a huge part in prevention. Organic foods and wines are a much better option than their pesticide laden couter parts. I would love to be able to have a huge veggie garden again. My son loves his veggies, and strawberries. Strawberies I always buy organic if I can, they are one of the top toxic laden fruits if you don't.

organic wine It is becoming a much greater concern for people as more research comes out on how toxic sprays, dyes ect affect our longterm health. It's no wonder it is an ever growing market every year. We intake these toxins every day, and more and more consumers are saying no to these products and are looking for a much healthier alternative.

The growing demand for organic products today influences farmers to grow their products according to the standard sets by the National Organic Foods Act (1990). For produce to be endorsed as organic they have to keep to strict regulations. Here in Canada it takes years for farmers to gain the status of Organic, and they must pass many vigorous tests and regulations to maintain their status. · Crops must be cultivated on soil that has not used pesticides and prohibited substances for a minimum of three years prior to the harvest

· Regular cautious supervision of soil productivity is made

· Proper dispersion of manure

· Use deterrence as the major form of pest regulation

· Should erect barriers that keep the flow of discarded materials from neighboring farms

Therefore, to be regarded as organic, the grapes should not be cared for with fungicides, herbicides, or pesticides. Farmers should not make use of chemical fertilizers either. Inside the winery, reverse osmosis, flavor stabilizers like oak chips or too much filtration are now prohibited also. Some particular strains of yeast are banned and most winemakers are using wild yeasts for the fermentation process.

The use of sulfites in wine is controversial among winemakers. Some favor the use of this substance, in very minute amounts, since it helps stabilize the wine. Others are against its use in organic wine altogether. organic wines Within the United States, the wine can only be considered "100% organic" if it does not contain sulfites and the grapes used are 100% organically produced. Some wines I have a very adverse reaction to becasue of the amount of sulfites. Wolf Blass is one of these wines, I don't know for sure if it's the sulfites...but my body does not like this particular wine. Which is really to bad because my palette loves wolf blass, so occassionally I might have a half a glass of it. But that's it, more than that gives me a killer headache the next day. :-(

If it contains a small amount of sulfite (100ppm) and the grapes used are grown with at least 95% ingredients the wine is labeled as "organic". A wine containing sulfites and 70% organically grown grapes is marked as "made from organic grapes".

While most wine companies promote the endeavors of wine makers to search for ways to do away with using sulfur dioxide. The fact still remain that wines devoid of sulfites are, in spite of everything, still very few in quantity.

In addition, the quality of these wines is inconsistent or unstable, giving a negative impression to the consumers.

Just like food, I think it usually a better and fresher tasting product, and wine is the same. If you grow pesticide-free produce in your backyard it always tastes better than the chemical laden stuff the stores have.

French organic wines continually turn up amongst the top ten premium wines at present. A possible explanation for this is that organic vineyards have healthier soils thus have a better resistance to poor weather conditions, pests or diseases.

Moreover, organic vineyards pick their grapes by hand only; allowing them to choose only the best bunches of grapes. This method gives the least amount of strain and harm to both the vine and the soil.

Organic wine producers decided on organic means to acquire the healthiest grapes and their wines exhibit that commitment to excellence.

Cheers
